Sichester Garages

Shalfleet Drive, London, W10 6TZ

Silchester is one of several new build schemes being developed by Peabody, one of London's oldest and largest housing associations. This development includes the demolition of the existing garages, day centre and estate office and the construction of 112 new mixed tenure residential units.

In addition to the housing there will be a new retail unit, a community facility and a community hub. The landscaping comprises a redeveloped public garden area adjacent to the site plus a new Mews Road and communal garden with children's play space.

Mace is the main contractor on the project, the first phase of which is due to complete in summer 2014. The project will be built in two phases.

The form of the building is a traditional RC frame with a masonry faade and punched in composite windows. The building is to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 and as such has extensive photovoltaic panels on the roof in combination with further areas of green and brown roofing.

At the time of construction commencing on site the building has been shortlisted for a New London Architecture Award. It is anticipated between Peabody and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea that the Silchester project will be a benchmark for the future regeneration of the North Kensington residential social housing area.
