Queensbridge Quarter

Holly Street, Hackney, E8 3BN

Queensbridge Quarter in the London Borough of Hackney is part of the Holly Street Estate regeneration scheme that has been developed by United House, a contractor specialising in social housing, and Hackney Homes, a subsidiary of Hackney Council. The new-build project has already been awarded a RIBA Design Award.

The regeneration scheme involved both demolition and refurbishment of existing blocks on the site of the former Holly Street Estate and now features 743 high-quality, energy-efficient homes in a street scene layout. The scheme incorporates a social housing element, with 40 affordable, dedicated social residential units that were constructed in two phases. A total of 151 homes are set within the Queensbridge Quarter scheme. The buildings feature 27 two and three bedroom houses, 83 one, two and three bedroom apartments, including two penthouses and a studio apartment.

The scheme makes extensive use of passive solar energy. It also uses a restricted palette of materials in combination with large feature balconies and coloured glass cladding to penthouses along the main road frontage, to respond sympathetically to the changes in scale and grain of the surrounding streets.
